Day trip to Murano, Italy

If you’re craving a short escape from the main canals of Venice then you should definitely take a quick trip to Murano. This small island is known for glass artwork creations and is a treat to the eyes.

Getting there:

To get here you can take a #12 vaporetto (water taxi) from the Fondamente Nove “A” stop, St. Marks area of Venice. The vaporetto takes about 30-minutes to reach Murano.
(This same line can also take you to another close by Island- Burano, which you can read about here.)

When getting off the vaporetto I suggest getting off at the second stop which will leave you close to a lighthouse by the water- (a cute photo-op spot with beautiful views over the water).

There are not many instructions needed for visiting Murano. The island is small and easily walkable. Once you are out of the vaporetto, to reach the main area filled with little shops, cafes and all the “must see spots” you just have to walk forward, away from the water and toward the center of the island.

What to do:

Although the homes may not be as colorful as in the neighboring Burano, Murano is filled with color from the glasswork creations everywhere. As you are walking notice the glass creations which are hiding in plain sight too- like the flowers on a balcony and the mirror hanging on a street wall. Also, take your time and stroll down the canal making sure to look at all the all the glass sculptures on display in the shops.

***What “not to miss”: the large blue star glass sculpture, which is located in a square right by the canal and also the free glass blowing display in the glass making factory near Calle S. Capriano (you should see a sign for”Fornace”.)
